Bison 3 images Created 9 Feb 2015
The American Bison is a large grazer that once roamed the Great Plains and most of North America. The Bison (often referred to as buffalo) was hunted to near extinction in the 1800's for food and sport, and, to deny the Native Americans an important resource. The bison has made a comeback in recent years and can be found in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, private preserves, and specialty ranches. A large bull can stand 5'-6' at the shoulder and weigh close to one ton. The animals are surprisingly quick and can run for short distances at over 35mph. Ask any tourist who has gotten too close during the rut!
